Altruism, Turnout and Strategic Voting Behavior

چکیده
We consider the problem of costly voting in a game-theoretic framework where agents are altruistic. We show that if, as usual, agentstypes are assumed to be independently and identically distributed, the classical theorem of Thomas R. Palfrey and Howard Rosenthal (1985) on the impossibility of large-scale turnout essentially survives, despite the introduction of altruism. We solve this problem by introducing additional uncertainty about the fraction of altruistic agents who support a given candidate. It turns out that under suitable homogeneity assumptions, this modi ed model is asymptotically equivalent to the rule utilitarian voter model of Timothy J. Feddersen and Alvaro Sandroni (2006, 2007), which is known to be consistent with large-scale turnout and strategic behavior. However, in contrast to rule utilitarian voter models, which typically require large-scale agreements among uncoordinated agents, our model is also compatible with several forms of heterogeneity in agentscharacteristics. It is hoped that this paper will help to close the discrepancy between our understanding of costless or small elections, which is largely shaped by pivotal-voter models, and that of costly, large elections. Altruism and voting: A large-turnout result that does not rely on civic duty or cooperative behavior
I propose a game-theoretic model of costly voting that predicts signi cant turnout rates even when the electorate is arbitrarily large. The model has two key features that jointly drive the result: (i) some agents are altruistic (or ethical), (ii) among the agents who prefer any given candidate, the fraction of altruistic agents is uncertain. When deciding whether to vote or not, an altruistic ...

This collection of essays investigates issues related to elections and wars. In the first essay, we present an auction-type model of war and characterize its unique equilibrium. We offer three different explanations for the causes of wars. First, as an individual-level explanation of war, we show that wars occur due to information asymmetry between governments. Second, as a societal-level expla...
متن کاملBlack Candidates and Black Turnout: A Study of Mayoral Elections in Louisiana∗
What effect does candidate race have on co-racial voter turnout? Recent studies suggest that the presence of a black candidate results in an increase in black turnout. We argue that much of these findings can be attributed to the different design choices of previous researchers, and absence of attention paid to strategic candidate behavior. In this study we examine mayoral elections in the stat...
متن کاملA Structural Model of Turnout and Voting in Multiple Elections " Third Version a Structural Model of Turnout and Voting in Multiple Elections *
This paper develops a unified approach to study participation and voting in multiple elections. The theoretical setting combines an “uncertain-voter” model of turnout with a spatial model of voting behavior. We apply our framework to the study of turnout and voting in U.S. presidential and congressional elections. We structurally estimate the model using individual-level data for the 2000 elect...

Scholars have recently reworked the traditional calculus of voting model by adding a term for benefits to others. Although the probability that a single vote affects the outcome of an election is quite small, the number of people who enjoy the benefit when the preferred alternative wins is large. As a result, people who care about benefits to others and who think one of the alternatives makes o...
